Superfood Toppings for Frozen Yogurt

When you think of frozen yogurt or ice cream toppings, it is improbable that health is the first thing that comes to your mind. Normally, frozen yogurt toppings are full of artificial ingredients and dyes, made with refined-sugar, and are far from a healthy addition to a big bowl of dessert.

Here at Clean Cuisine, we don’t want desserts to be a rare “indulgence”. Rather, we want dessert to be something you can look forward to, thoroughly enjoy, and know that you’re doing your body a favor! Yes..a favor, because desserts can actually be HEALTHY!

This Superfood Toppings for Frozen Yogurt is just that…delicious, and healthy! Loaded with superfoods, and filled with flavor, this Superfood Toppings adds the perfect crunch to tonight’s dessert.

Crunchy Superfood Topping Ingredients

This Crunchy Superfood Toppings for Frozen Yogurt is simple and easy, requiring only 3 main ingredients, and zero cook time! Yes, you read that right…these Crunchy Toppings only take 2 minutes flat!

So what exactly are in our Crunchy Superfood Toppings for Frozen Yogurt? It’s simple. Here’s the rundown…

Cacao Nibs

Many people think of chocolate as a “junk-food” that should only be enjoyed on rare occasions. This couldn’t be farther from the truth! The milk and sugar found in chocolate bars and candy are the real culprits of this food being classified as unhealthy. Cacao itself is actually an incredible health food with lots of benefits!

Cacao is minimally processed, which results in a highly nutrient-dense, rich powder. Cocoa, on-the-other-hand is highly processed, and loses many of its nutrients in the process.

Cacao is highly anti-inflammatory due to its high levels of polyphenols, helps to raise serotonin (happy hormones), and has been studied to aid in regulating blood sugar. Besides the health benefits, cacao is DELICIOUS, and far from a burden to add into your diet.

Wild Blueberries

Small but with huge benfits, wild blueberries have more total antioxidant capacity (ORAC) than most fruits and veggies. Although incredibly healthy as well, wild blueberries have a higher ORAC value than their bigger cousins, cultivated blueberries.

Additionally, wild blueberries are full of anti-inflammatory benefits from their anthocyanin (an antioxidant), offer a hefty dose of immune-boosting Vitamin C, and can even aid in anti-aging. As a side note, blueberries taste amazing with cacao, making them the perfect combo for this recipe!

Nuts and Seeds

As my husband is allergic to nuts, I opted for sunflower seeds instead. However, you can add whatever nut or seed you prefer in this recipe!

Nuts and seeds, in general, offer large doses of plant-based protein, healthy fats, and many other nutrients. Enjoying nuts regularly can aid in lowering your chances of high blood pressure in the future. They are also a filling and healthy snack to enjoy throughout the day.

Make it Your Own!

While the ingredients above are what I chose to include in my Superfood Toppings for Frozen Yogurt, this was purely based on personal preference. Feel free to take away, add, or even modify the amount of any of the ingredients in this recipe. Want some ideas for extra frozen yogurt or ice cream topper additions? Try…

Dried Fruit

Try adding freeze-dried for a crunchy option, or dried with some juices still remaining for a chewier option. I love dried cranberries, strawberries, or mulberries as toppings! Importantly, remember to check for brands without added refined sugar.

Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are full of gamma-linolenic acid (highly anti-inflammatory), full of protein, and offer a nutty and earthy flavor with a soft crunch to your topper. Full of health benefits, and delicious!

Dates

If you’ve never had chocolate and dates together, you’re in for a treat! Cacao and dates in combination taste like a sweet caramel treat, and are a great addition to this topper. Dates have been studied for their digestive health benefits, are filled with anti-inflammatory phytochemicals, and the perfect natural sweetener!

Is Frozen Yogurt Healthy?

While frozen yogurt is normally thought to be a healthier ice cream alternative, conventional frozen yogurt is far from healthy. Frozen yogurt is often full of refined-sugar, dairy, and even artificial ingredients at times. This is one treat you’ll want to avoid the conventional version of. Skip the frozen yogurt shops, and make it from home instead!

What do you think about The Publix Greenwise Organic Brand? I don't know if you ever tried it but as far as taste and ingredients, I think it is the best store bought ice cream out there. There are only 3 flavors available but the Chocolate and Vanilla have the better ingredients (no soy). The Coconut Bliss looks ok but it contains agave which I avoid. I would be interested to know what you think about the Publix Greenwise brand.

Hi Marilyn, Oh gosh, I didn't even know Publix Greenwise Organic Brand existed! Is it coconut-cream based? I just tried looking it up online but it's only coming up with dairy-based ice cream. Do you happen to have a link? If not, I will definitely be on the lookout for it next time I go to Publix. Thank you so much for sharing =)
